Seller Verification & Tax Reporting
MotorCircle Marketplace verifies sellers privately so the public Marketplace can remain pseudonymous while the platform meets payment, fraud-prevention and legal/reporting responsibilities.
Policy version 2026-10-06.1 · MotorCircle MarketplaceThe MotorCircle Trade Store is separate and uses its own sales/returns terms. These pages relate to third-party Marketplace transactions.
Who needs verification
MotorCircle requires seller verification before a seller can publish live Marketplace listings or receive seller proceeds. Buyers can continue to browse the Marketplace without completing seller verification.
Information MotorCircle may collect
Depending on the seller legal structure, MotorCircle can collect the legal name, primary address, date of birth, UK National Insurance number, company or LLP registration number, partnership Unique Taxpayer Reference, VAT number where available, and other information needed to verify the seller or administer Marketplace payments.
Public privacy
National Insurance numbers, dates of birth, tax identifiers and full private addresses are not published on Marketplace listings. Public listings use the MotorCircle seller reference and broad location. Where a business seller deals with a consumer, the business identity/contact information required before the buyer commits is shown at the appropriate transaction stage.
Digital platform reporting
UK digital-platform rules can require platform operators to collect and verify seller information, identify reportable sellers, report transaction/payment and fee information to HMRC, and provide sellers with a copy of information reported about them. A platform report does not itself mean the seller owes tax.
Occasional sellers
The UK rules include an exclusion for some low-volume sales-of-goods sellers. Whether that exclusion applies depends on both the number of sales and the statutory value threshold for the reportable period. MotorCircle may still require seller identity verification as a platform safety and payments condition even where a seller is ultimately not reportable.
Retention and re-checks
MotorCircle keeps the records needed to evidence its due-diligence and reporting steps for the legally required retention period. Seller address information can also require periodic re-confirmation or earlier re-verification if MotorCircle learns that details may no longer be reliable.
Third-party verification
MotorCircle can use hosted third-party verification so sensitive identity evidence does not need to be stored in the Marketplace plugin. Stripe Identity can verify identity documents and, where configured, a matching selfie. Stripe Connect can collect the information needed for seller payout/KYC onboarding. UK companies and LLPs can also be checked against Companies House. MotorCircle stores the provider reference and result rather than copies of identity documents or selfies.
MotorCircle remains responsible
Using Stripe, Companies House or another provider does not remove MotorCircle’s own responsibility for Marketplace eligibility, due diligence, seller information quality and any applicable digital-platform reporting obligations. MotorCircle therefore keeps its own seller-verification and reporting status alongside third-party results.
These are MotorCircle platform rules and process descriptions, not a substitute for legal advice. Applicable statutory rights and legal obligations take priority where they cannot lawfully be excluded or reduced.
